Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) described former President Trump’s debate performance against Vice President Harris on Tuesday evening as a “huge fail.”
In an interview with ABC News, which hosted the debate, Christie remarked, “Harris effectively demonstrated her presence on that stage and her commitment to uniting the country. In contrast, Donald Trump focused more on irrelevant issues—like people eating pets and his rally sizes—than on substantive topics such as the economy.”
“And that is a huge fail tonight,” Christie remarked in an interview highlighted by Mediaite.
Christie, who previously challenged Trump in the GOP primary before withdrawing ahead of the Iowa caucuses earlier this year, has emerged as a prominent critic of the former president.
He praised Harris’s debate performance, noting that she appeared “exquisitely well-prepared.” According to Christie, Harris effectively set traps for Trump, who ended up "chasing every rabbit down every hole." Christie criticized Trump for being drawn into irrelevant tangents and conspiracy theories, such as the unfounded claim about immigrants eating pets—a notion that has also faced scrutiny from Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio).
“Whoever did debate prep for Donald Trump should be fired,” Christie asserted. “He was not good tonight at all.”
The debate was a pivotal moment for Harris, as she aimed to present herself and her policies to voters while provoking Trump into an erratic performance. With her strong showing, Christie believes Harris is now being viewed by Americans as a “potential president.”
“That’s what she needed to accomplish tonight. Trump better get to work, or he’s going to lose this election,” Christie warned.
Following the debate, a CNN flash poll revealed that 63 percent of voters believed Harris outperformed Trump.
